The reason I chose to draw this composition is due to my passion for the futuristic Art Deco architecture present throughout the film ‘Metropolis’, but also because of the depicted themes.
It makes sense why Art Deco was the architectural style of the Metropolis city, as it reflects admiration for a utopian, lavish, modern lifestyle and for the machine, the main characteristic of the city’s high class. However, the most famous quote of the film, ‘The mediator between the head and the hands must be the heart’, highlights the drawbacks of industrialization and technology. Thus, replacing people from various activities, such as creative ones, for example, would strip their beauty and essence away.
Furthermore, ‘Metropolis’ also brings attention to the inequalities and injustices between social classes and how the high-class population was not, and unfortunately still isn’t aware of the fact that others may live in unfair conditions. Even though some of its views and the film itself might seem outdated, it was revolutionary for its time. I find it very interesting that through ‘Metropolis’, we can get insight into people’s thoughts and fears from back then, which are quite similar to present ones. Consequently, the purpose of the past is to learn from it and avoid mistakes from happening again to create a better future.
